South Carolina seceded from the Union on 20 December 1860; six other Southern States seceded from the Union as a result of the Federal (Yankee) invasion of Charleston Harbor on 9 January 1861. These seven Cotton States formed a new government and a new flag. This seven star flag, the First National Flag, was raised above Fort Sumter on 18 April 1861 after Yankee Major Robert Anderson left Fort Sumter and went back up North where he belonged. Because of this, the First National Flag is also known as The Fort Sumter Flag, and The Cotton States Flag. This is a very significant flag in our great Southern history and we should all be proud of what our ancestors did as they fought under the First National Flag of the Confederacy.
